May 5th is National Astronaut Day which has adopted a Peter Panish hashtag we believe in astronauts for the occasion.

Back in 1961, on this day, naval aviator Alan Shepard became the second man to travel into space. He made a 15-minute sub-orbital flight in a Mercury capsule, splashing down in the Atlantic for retrieval.

Unlike Yuri Gagarin, Shepard made another trip into space, this time as commander of Apollo 14, piloting the lunar module Antares on to the Moon’s surface.
