In space no one can hear you scream, but that hasn’t stopped Jack White’s Third Man Records sending a turntable into space to play a record. They celebrated seven years of dealing discs with a space mission.
The gold-plated Jack track featured dialogue from Carl Sagan and became the first vinyl played in space. I presume it’s 45rpm on the “Icarus Craft” or did they use that weird 16rpm format reserved for in-car record players?
The turntable played Sagan’s A Glorious Dawn on repeat as a high-altitude weather balloon carried it to a 28,000 meter height. It rose for about 80 minutes and fell considerably quicker once the balloon burst.
